Blocking, also called garment fit adjustment, is a specialized garment-care technique that reshapes and restores a piece to its intended size, shape, and appearance. At Oaks Fine Cleaners, our specialists use controlled moisture, heat, and hand-shaping to bring sweaters, knitwear, and other garments back to the way they were meant to fit. It is the service for a cashmere sweater that has stretched at the cuffs, a knit dress that has grown through the body, or a favorite piece that has quietly lost its shape over years of wear.
About Sweater & Knit Blocking
Knitwear loses its shape long before it wears out. Cuffs and hems go slack, shoulders widen on the hanger, and a sweater that once fit closely starts to drape where it used to hold. Blocking corrects that. We work the garment back toward its original dimensions using moisture, heat, and hand technique appropriate to the fiber, then set the shape so it holds.
Because every fabric and construction behaves differently, we evaluate each piece individually before we begin — the fiber, the knit structure, and how far the garment has moved from where it started. Wool, cashmere, silk blends, and fine cotton knits each respond differently to moisture and heat, and the technique changes accordingly. We will tell you upfront whether blocking is right for your garment and what result you can reasonably expect.

What is garment blocking?
Blocking is a garment-care technique that reshapes a piece back to its intended size and shape using controlled moisture, heat, and hand-shaping. It is most often used on sweaters and knitwear, which stretch and distort with wear far more readily than woven fabrics. Some cleaners call it knit reshaping or sizing; we also call it garment fit adjustment.
Can you fix a sweater that shrank in the wash?
Sometimes. Mild to moderate shrinkage in wool and cashmere often responds well to blocking — the fibers can be relaxed and worked back out toward their original measurements. Severe shrinkage is a different problem: when a knit has felted, the fibers have locked together permanently and no amount of reshaping will recover it. Bring the garment in and we will tell you which one you have before you commit to anything.
Will blocking make my sweater a size larger?
No. Blocking restores a garment to its original dimensions — it does not create new ones. If you need a piece genuinely resized, our Alteration & Reweaving service is the right place to start.
What kinds of garments can be blocked?
Sweaters, cardigans, knit dresses and skirts, cashmere and wool knits, fine cotton and silk-blend knits, and some structured woven pieces. Because fiber and construction determine what is possible, we assess every garment individually rather than quoting a blanket answer.
